LF Networking Demos

Experience the latest open source networking demos at ONS EU! The LF Networking community of projects has pulled together 10 top demos that cover different areas of collaboration and innovation across the open networking stack. Visit the booth during expo hours and engage with the demo managers about their industry-leading work. The LFN Booth will be located just to the left of the main entrance.

ONAP Control Loops & ONAP CLAMP Dashboard (ONAP) - Presented by AT&T

We will use the ONAP Beijing release and will demonstrate the design, configuration, and deployment of a closed loop instance acting on a VNF(vCPE). The closed loop will be based on a Threshold Crossing alert that will restart the vCPE.
The Control Loop DMAAP events will be captured and displayed by the ONAP CLAMP dashboard and will demonstrate the complete “Closed Loop in Action” of ONAP.

OPNFV Testing for Open Infrastructure Federation (OPNFV, OpenStack) - Presented by the OPNFV Community

The emergence of 5G and Edge Computing scenarios introduce huge requirements for Open Infrastructure and Telco NFV. While the current OpenStack architecture is widely considered a de-facto VIM solution, it has not been tested for Edge Cloud. This demo will present ongoing collaboration between OPNFV and OpenStack Keystone teams evaluating scenarios involving federation. The OPNFV global lab infrastructure (Pharos) is used for deploying specific edge scenarios designed to test identity management requirements. The OPNFV CI/CD tool-chain and test frameworks are utilized to automate testing in technically diverse environments with a view to accelerating Edge Cloud activities and solutions in both communities.

Network Telemetry Analytics - Collecting, Ingesting, and Analyzing Telemetry Data (PNDA) - Presented by Cisco, Huawei, Gradiant, Inocybe Technologies, and Xoriant

Collecting data for analysis and troubleshooting has always been an important aspect in monitoring network health. Yet today, streaming telemetry provides a mechanism to transmit real high velocity and high volume data. Thus streaming telemetry, converts the monitoring process into a Big Data proposition that requires the rapid extraction and analysis of massive data sets to improve decision-making. Open source big data analytics technologies are now being widely applied outside of big web companies and innovation in the big data space is extremely rapid. PNDA.io is a Linux Foundation Collaboration project which aims to accelerate the adoption of big data analytics within this ecosystem is already leveraged by several big data solutions. One particular example is the integration of PNDA into ONAP’s “Data Collection and Analytics” component, which is to become available as part of the next ONAP release.

We’ll show two demos: One which highlights PNDA’s base functionality – and one which provides a preview of the PNDA integration into ONAP DCAE. In the first demo, we use Pipeline (a Model-Driven Telemetry collection service) to collect MDT data from routers and stream it directly to the PNDA data bus. This network data is then consumed real time by an ETL streaming application (extensible to multiple data models), applying domain knowledge to produce data ready for visualization and for further processing. The output of the ETL application is also taken through a batch processing application that performs Network Traffic-Loss Analysis to discover unintentional black-holing. Ad hoc scalability of both these application types is enabled through the PNDA.io platform. The second demo gives a glimpse at the integration of PNDA and ONAP DCAE, and shows how event data from a VNF controlled by ONAP becomes available in PNDA for further analysis and post processing.

ONAP-Powered Cross-Operator Connectivity Service Demo (ONAP) - Presented by CMCC, Vodafone, and Huawei

In this demo, we will present CCVPN (Cross Domain and Cross Layer VPN) where SOTN and ONAP are combined in order to create (Layer 2) VPN connectivity services. The objective of the CCVPN demo is to demonstrate two of many ONAP’s strong orchestration capabilities: (1) interoperability with 3rd party SDN Controllers and (2) interworking across Service Providers. In CCVPN, one instance of ONAP is deployed in each Operator’s environment (CMCC and Vodafone). In each instance, the Operator can automatically design and setup VPN services. Such services can also be deployed across different network domains through the orchestration of multiple 3rd party SOTN controllers. Finally, the 2 ONAP instances will interwork to demonstrate automatic Cross Carrier end-to-end international VPN service creation.

Service Mesh and SDN: At-Scale Cluster Load Balancing (Tungsten Fabric, Linux OS, Istio, Envoy, Kubernetes, HAProxy) - Presented by the Tungsten Fabric Community

From service mesh, to ingress, to network policy, to encryption and more, networking and security has shifted left, propelled earlier into the DevOps time horizon. In this demo, you see how Tungsten Fabric, an SDN for Kubernetes, serving well beyond the basics of CNI, makes a great foundation and complement for service meshes like Istio. We’ll show how Tungsten Fabric’s cloud-agnostic service load balancer implementation for Kubernetes external IP, how it’s useful for Istio Ingress and in general, and discuss scale-out load balancing, from gateways, to ingress, to service proxies.

Automating Transport Services Over Multi-Domain Networks (OpenDaylight) - Presented by Lumina Networks

This demonstration will show an intent-based networking application that can implement user-defined paths over multiple network domains simultaneously. This application’s unique feature stems from OpenDaylight’s ability to abstract the differences between network types. Transport SDN will be the particular use case shown.

This demonstration is recommended for service providers or enterprises that want to migrate between different networking technologies such as BGP, PCEP, and OpenFlow while maintaining service continuity. The technology shown is in high-availability production deployment today at several tier-1 operators.

LFN Orange Openlab: A Neutral Open Source Catalyst & Playground (ONAP, OPNFV, Acumos, OpenCI, Openstack, Kubernetes) - Presented by Orange and 10+ partners

Orange officially launched the ONAP OpenLab beginning 2018. This OpenLab is used to support several LFN projects: OPNFV, ONAP, and Acumos.

It was already used to support OPNFV CI in Danube, has been used by VNF actors (tuning of vEPC test case by Rebecca for OPNFV Fraser) and used for OPNFV plugfests. It has been built using OPNFV best practices reusing infrastructure automation (XCI on bare metal), scenario installation, test framework reuse (Functest and Yardstick + test API/DB). It also provides an ONAP solution for community members.

Since February, about 80 accounts have been created. More than 50% corresponds to external users including vendors, telcos, and academics. The next step consists in integrating Acumos CI pipelines. The demo deals with user management, supervision, CI/CD pipelines (to deploy and test the infrastructure and the orchestration solution)

An Open Approach: Virtualizing the CO for Mobile Services (OPNFV, ODL, OpenStack, OCP) - Presented by Red Hat and 10+ partners

With the latest developments in orchestration tools and SDN controllers, inbuilt capabilities for a virtualized central office are now available to create solutions that support the delivery of residential, business and mobile services. Building on the Virtual Central Office concept debuted last year at the OPNFV Summit in Beijing that demonstrated both residential and enterprise services, the VCO Demo 2.0 has evolved to mobile services by focusing on the implementation of vRAN (virtual radio access network) as well as the virtualized mobile packet core elements (vEPC) which represent a minimum viable mobile access network configuration. The demo will highlight the collaborative power of open source communities to innovate and collaborate around one of the industry’s most pressing use cases. A portfolio of demo assets will be made available to the community to help replicate the demo in their own environments.

SDN Deployment with Multi Data-Path Options (Tungsten Fabric, FD.io) - Presented by Sofioni Networks & ATS

Sofioni Networks is an SDN product company. We are developing hybrid SDN solutions, bringing options to our customers by merging leading Opensource SDN control and data-path solutions. This demo is to show VPP forwarding plane work as part of Tungsten Fabric Cluster in a hybrid data-path environment. The integration has TF Control Plane connected to one of the compute-host running VPP as data path instead of the regular kernel module or DPDK vRouter and other as a regular DPDK vRouter. A three-node Tungsten Fabric setup will be used for this POC, where we will have a control node running TF Controller on one of the nodes. The other two nodes will be compute-nodes with vRouter on one and other running VPP as the data-path component. We will demonstrate L2 and L3 cross-platform functionality by validating forwarding packets from a VM spawned on VPP compute node to another VM spawned on a TF vRouter node using VxLAN tunnels. The second part of the demo would be to spawn a Service-Chain using TF controller and having two service Instances spawned across the two compute hosts, one using VPP and the other TF-vRouter.

Intelligent ONAP Policies Using AI/ML Realized Through Acumos (ONAP, Acumos) - Presented by Tech Mahindra Limited

To get to auto-pilot mode of operations through ONAP, the static policy based closed control loops in ONAP are enhanced with AI/ML capabilities. Acumos provides the platform to efficiently onboard, package and deploy the “pre-trained”; production grade predictor that uses AI/ML techniques. Basis specific business and operations needs; predictor could be purpose built.

Through ONAP – Acumos integration, the predictor gets deployed in ONAP DCAE environment and becomes a part of policy-based decision-making framework. The AI/ML predictor is on-boarded, packaged as a Microservice and converted in a Docker Image by Acumos platform. This Micro service created in Acumos platform gets deployed in ONAP to monitor the VMs health and generate events in case of abnormality. The events generated by Micro service will be fed in policy framework for enabling closed-loop automation using other ONAP components.
