Liota Hackathon

Date: Monday, October 10
Time:  10:00am-5:00pm

Liota is an SDK and framework, and its purpose is to ease the development of gateway applications for moving data from devices to data-centers and performing commands from data-center components.
Many in the IoT community are settling on a three-tier architecture for the Internet-of-Things. The ‘Things’, IoT Gateways, and Cloud/Data-center. IoT gateways provide a useful de-coupling function between the machine world and the web/enterprise world. See the VMware CTO blog for a deeper discussion of this topic.

Hackathon Components

  • ABB YuMi Robot (Cosima) - An actual fully functional YuMi, named Cosima, will be present.
  • Dell IoT Gateway - Liota runs on this gateway and attendees will develop a liota application to collect telemetry from Cosima and forward to both the VMware IoT infrastructure manager and a ThingWorx instance.
  • VMware’s IoT Infrastructure Manager - Technology we’ve been building that models IoT infrastructure management from an Enterprise IT point-of-view.
  • ThingWorx - The ThingWorx platform provides a complete application design, runtime, and intelligence environment, allowing organizations to rapidly create innovative applications that unleash the value found at the intersection of people, systems, and intelligent connected Things.

Agenda

  • Overview of liota, Dell IoT Gateway, ThinkWorx, YuMi REST API
  • Walkthrough some sample liota programs
  • Coding

Criteria

  • Attendees will be asked to join teams of two to four developers
  • Each team will collaborate on a liota program that collects data from Cosima and forwards to either ThingWorx or the Manager.
  • Liota programs are written in Python

Judging and Prizes

  • Liota programs will be judged on innovative use of the metrics and commands available from the YuMi REST API in both the Manager and ThingWorx.
  • Judging will be by representatives from one or more of VMware, ThingWorx, Dell, and ABB
  • Three Galileo development boards will be awarded to the winners of the hackathon.

Yocto Project Developer Day

Date: Monday, October 10
Time:  9:00am-5:00pm

Registration Fee: $249

Join the Yocto Project engineers to learn how to create custom-build Linux distributions for embedded devices, by using layers and recipes designed to resolve incompatibilities between different embedded system configurations. The Yocto Project Developer Day is taking place on October 10, 2016. This is one day before the Embedded Linux Conference Europe, so make your plans to arrive a day earlier and learn more about Yocto Project’s open source, high-quality infrastructure and tools.

At the end of the day, you will be proficient at:

  • Calibrating your development environment
  • Building a Yocto Project compatible platform using partner boards
  • Navigating the building process smoothly
  • Scaling your build to the needs of your desired embedded platform.

Who could benefit:

  • System/Software Developers
  • Tech Leads / Development Leads
  • Software Architects
  • Chief Engineers
  • System Engineers
  • Development Engineers
  • Embedded Engineers / Programmer
  • DevOps / System Administrators
  • Application Engineers
  • Open Source Technologists

Level: You will be able to attend advanced and beginners classes according to your self-assess level. A preliminary schedule will be available soon.

Hardware: Choose an actual board to play with and keep at the end of the day. MinnowBoard Turbot, Dragon Board and Beagle Bone Black are your weapons of choice. Make your selection upon registering.

Further details, including schedule information, can be found here.

Real-Time Summit - SOLD OUT

Date: Tuesday, October 11
Time:  9:00am-6:00pm

The Real-Time Summit is organized by the Linux Foundation Real-Time Linux (RTL) collaborative project. The event is intended to gather developers and users of the PREEMPT_RT patch. The main intent is to provide room for discussion between developers, tooling experts and users. Further details, including the tentative schedule, can be found here.

Workshop - IoT 101: Getting Connected for Developers

Date: Wednesday, October 12
Time: 9:00am-5:00pm

Are you a developer who wants to learn about the Internet of Things (IoT)? Do you want to retrieve data from Internet-connected sensors for applications in home automation, healthcare, automotive, government and more? Do you want to control sensors and devices remotely from cloud, mobile, or desktop applications? In this IoT workshop you will use an IoT prototyping kit (that is yours to keep) to learn how to program a microcontroller (the “Thing” in IoT) that uses a variety of physical sensors such as light and temperature sensors; control switches; servos; and motors.

You will learn how to connect this “Thing” to Microsoft Azure IoT services to both collect data and issue control commands to the devices. Once you master prototyping the hardware and connecting it to the Cloud, you will learn how to leverage Azure IoT services to gain insight into the data coming from your connected Thing, including analytics and machine learning. Following the workshop you may continue your experience with your prototyping kit with additional hands-on labs you can subscribe to online. All you need to bring is your own laptop for this workshop.

Lead by: Ivan R. Judson, Senior Program Manager, Microsoft

Required Equipment:

  • Laptop running a recent version of Linux, OS X, or Windows 10.
  • Install the software listed in the Getting Started guide (we’ll send this to you once you register).*

Microsoft Azure will provide:

  • Hardware kits for you to keep!
  • Labs to guide you through the process of building your IoT device.

*Due to limited seating in the workshop and in order to provide accurate equipment counts, you will be asked to verify your attendance prior to the event.

Tracing Summit - SOLD OUT

Date: Wednesday, October 12
Time: 9:00am-5:30pm

The Tracing Summit will gather people involved in development and end-users of tracing tools as well as trace analysis tools. The main target of this event is to provide room for discussion between people in the various areas that benefit from tracing, namely parallel, distributed and/or real-time systems, as well as kernel development.

OpenWrt Summit - SOLD OUT

Date: Thursday, October 13
Time:  8:15am-6:00pm

To help encourage the growth and strength of OpenWrt, LEDE and the broader ecosystem, the OpenWrt Summit Committee is organizing the second OpenWrt Summit.

The OpenWrt Summit will benefit anyone who wants to learn more about OpenWrt software and is a great opportunity for the core community to get together face to face. In particular OpenWrt will be perfect for:

  • OpenWrt/LEDE hackers (core team and contributors)
  • Software developers who maintain OpenWrt/LEDE packages or who want to create packages
  • Home users of OpenWrt/LEDE
  • Hardware and software engineers working with OpenWrt/LEDE, whether at work or for fun
  • Anyone interested in OpenWrt, LEDE, free and open source wireless networking, or embedded Linux
